On June 20th, the Chinese American Professionals Association (CAPA) delegation, led by President Liu Rongwen, visited Chongqing Stilwell Museum. In this museum that tells stories of an American military figure, they discovered precious imprints connecting themselves to Chinese culture and the history of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.
Many members of the delegation have long been engaged in Chinese language education and the promotion of Chinese culture in the United States. Some members' ancestors were graduates of the Whampoa Military Academy, participating in the Chinese Expeditionary Force and witnessing the tumultuous years of wartime resistance. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Whampoa Military Academy, prompting the delegation to visit various cities in China to commemorate their ancestors' contributions to the nation during the war.
As the "wartime capital" during the war of resistance, Chongqing became a pivotal stop on the delegation's journey to trace their roots. The rich military culture and historical depth of Chongqing Stilwell Museum deeply fascinated them. In the military conference room of the former residence, one member exclaimed in front of the sprawling map of the Stilwell Road: “I have to take a photo of this; It's vital historical documentation." In the exhibition hall, the delegation was captivated by World War II photographs and artifacts, eagerly snapping photos with their phones. Upon hearing from the guide that "Stilwell visited China five times," they eagerly asked, "When and for what purpose?"

Of particular note, the flashcards used by Stilwell during his early study of Chinese caught everyone's attention. In July 1920, Stilwell and his wife arrived in Beijing with their children and stayed in a courtyard at No. 3 Beizongbu Hutong. Stilwell not only taught at the North China Union Language School but also studied Chinese with a private tutor, adopting the Chinese name "史迪威". Standing before the display case, a member of the delegation joyfully discovered that Stilwell had used the Wade-Giles romanization system for Chinese learning, and promptly shared the evolution from Wade-Giles to modern Pinyin with everyone. They gathered around those flashcards, reading with great interest the sentences written by Stilwell depicting daily life in Beijing at that time.

Across a century, the delegation had a historical rendezvous with Stilwell across time and space. One member expressed that his father had fought in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. However, before visiting the museum, he could only access related information online, unable to feel the warmth of physical artifacts. Today, stepping into the Chongqing Stilwell Museum, every detail, every object, and every picture here allowed him to deeply feel the reality and weight of history. Dedicated to protecting the legacy of wartime cooperation between China and the United States and passing down the profound friendship between the two peoples, Chongqing Stilwell Museum is not only a tribute to the past but also an inspiration for the future.
