On July 31st, the Chongqing Stilwell Museum welcomed another group of youth on a “root-seeking” journey, including 40 overseas Chinese youth from Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Belgium, Sweden, Spain, and the U.K., participating in the 2024 “Seeking Roots in China” Summer Camp (Chongqing University of Education).

The event, co-organized by the Chongqing Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese and Chongqing University of Education, aims to invite overseas Chinese youth back to China to witness the nation’s great achievements firsthand and to guide them in inheriting traditional Chinese culture. As a major historical and cultural site protected at the national level and a patriotic education base in Chongqing, the Chongqing Stilwell Museum became a significant stop on this root-seeking journey.

At the Chongqing Stilwell Museum, the campers followed the tour guide to learn about General Stilwell's life and the cooperation between China and the U.S. during World War II. A Spanish student was thrilled to visit the former residence of General Stilwell and expressed that it was her first time learning about this chapter of China-U.S. cooperation.

A pair of siblings from Belgium described this tour as “intriguing” and said they were particularly impressed by the construction of the Stilwell Road. This tour provided them with deep insights into a history they had never encountered before. A middle school student from Sweden described the museum experience as “mind-blowing” and shared in fluent Chinese: “I never imagined that a foreign general would travel such great distances to China, selflessly helping the Chinese people and even learning Chinese to better integrate into this land. His respect and love for the Chinese culture truly blew my mind.”

Speaking of event preparation, Chen Ning, Vice Dean of the Continuing Education College at Chongqing University of Education, mentioned that since the announcement of the event, many overseas Chinese parents had eagerly signed up. They believed that compared to ordinary sightseeing, such a root-seeking journey holds greater educational significance, allowing their children to reconnect with Chinese culture through firsthand experience and learn knowledge beyond the classroom. Today, the overseas Chinese youth attentively toured the museum exhibits, deepening their identification with the Chinese nation, and communicating in Chinese with friends from around the world. “The significance of such activities is priceless.”
